Introducing Scaleup Launchpad program's fifth Estonian company - GaltTec.

What is the core idea behind your company or product?

GaltTec started as a team of scientists working on new type of materials - ceramic microtubes the size of a human hair. Apparently this innovative material is also a really good core component for fuel cells - electric power sources - for portable and off-grid applications. Now GaltTec is revolutionizing the portable energy sector with compact and energy efficient power sources that can run on a number of green fuels, including hydrogen and ethanol.

How well do you know the Swedish and Finnish markets in your industry?

Our connections with Finnish customers and ecosystem have definitely been more frequent than with the Swedish counterparts, but things have started equalizing more recently. Which is a natural thing to happen, as Finland and Sweden are among the most important markets in our close proximity and known innovation leaders globally. Though, all in all our exposure and knowledge about those markets could and should be better, since the potential for collaboration and export are significant.

What are your company’s aspirations from this venture, and does it foresee a market debut in Finland or Sweden?

Scaleup Launchpad is a natural continuation for GaltTec in terms of incubation/acceleration, as we have reached the stage where the initial kick-off has been successful, but scaling our operations poses new challenges. Last year Our CEO Glen attended some seminars as a guest even before joining the program, which made the application decision really easy - the topics covered were related to the everyday struggles of GaltTec! The seminar program and mentoring opportunities were the main benefits, in order to support GaltTec's growth, but connections to our close Nordic neighbours is equally important. We already had some ties to Finland, but new connections in Sweden are bound to bring success in no time!

The program is almost halfway through – what have been your biggest ahaa moments or wins so far?

A very memorable moment was visit to Norrköping, Sweden by our CEO Glen. It was truly inspiring to see how industry, academia and local government have managed to come together to create a collaborative environment, where modern technologies are used in city planning, but large industry requiring traditional infrastructure is not left behind. Especially great to see this happening in a town comparable in size to GaltTec's home base - Tartu. Local organizers of the visit from Norrköping Science Park really pulled off valuable meetings with local companies and several promising collaborations with Swedish companies are already in works for GaltTec!

What were your first impressions of other companies involved in the project?

In startup world the team is often considered as the most important part of a venture. Based on the first interactions with the people from other companies in the program, signs of great success are definitely in the air, as the people behind the companies are enthusiastic, with great ideas to real world problems. And some of them already have a remarkable track record with their companies. An inspiring environment to continue our journey!
